Giacomo da Lentini Sonnet XXI
Just like the sun that sends its rays
Through glass without fragmenting it,
Or ladies' mirrored images
Pass through the eyes and go beyond,
So Love will strike where he intends
And send his dart from where he stands:
It strikes the place that's least foreseen,
Goes through the eyes and cleaves the heart.
The place where Love's dart comes to rest
Flames up as soon as it is struck
And burns within, unseen without;
And it joins two hearts into one
And teaches them the art of love:
Each loves the other equally.
